Recently, universal basic income has been floated by Silicon Valley capitalists as a solution to the growing inequality in the United States. But political economist Peter Bohmer points out that the proposal comes nowhere near what needs to be done. His proposal is to keep social programs in place (rather than gut them) while giving people more per year to live on. As an economist he has credibility in actually spelling out how all this would be paid for.
