Between 2003 and 2011 Lula’s presidency was surprisingly unsocialist.
Rather than joining Chavez and Evo Morales in building 21st century socialism, Lula played ball with the global capitalist elite. But eleven years later, economic times have gotten worse. Surely Lula will become more left. The following are some indicators of why he won’t. Twenty five percent of the population didn’t vote. If most of the absentee voters were working class (as they usually are) he hasn’t reached them. He was endorsed without much qualification, if any, by the New York Times along with the leaders of French and German imperialism. Additionally, he spoke of uniting with the right and rebuilding a stability for foreign investment. Lula is a centrist at best.
