Most of the women who work in retail have jobs as checkers or sales clerks. As brick and mortar stores disappear, so do these women’s jobs. The combination of off-shoring, automation and online shopping, – especially the “Amazon effect” – are having a devastating effect on working class women. 129,000 women lost retail jobs in 2017. The Guardian frames the economy and job market as a “long, slow recovery”. Our question is…”recovery for whom?”
