The word “totalitarian” has been used from its inception to characterize socialist countries which: a) do not have more than one party; b) the party controls the state; c) all social life is controlled by the party; d) dissent is severely punished.
However, totalitarian can also mean rates of imprisonment and punishment of whistleblowers. This article argues that by using these standards the United States and the UK are the most totalitarian in the world.
