The slogan championing the 99% first originated, as far we know, with the Occupy movement. The 99% slogan captures the fact that a tiny portion of wealth is controlled by an elite. However as this article shows, that slogan slurs over the difference between the upper middle class, the middle class and the working class. More specifically, it locates what the leaders of identity politics (the promoting of race and gender issues over class issues) who reside in the upper middle class have to gain by promoting identity politics.
