One of the most common criticisms against worker cooperatives is that they are impractical when it comes to scale. But in both Yankeedom and Canada, there are co-ops organized at the federal level. Their function is to oversee and provide a coordinating function for individual co-ops. The Canadian Worker Co-op Federation provides many services for co-ops. It educates the public about the existence of co-ops. It provides funding sources for co-ops that need help getting off the ground. It provides technical assistance to those co-ops that are off the ground but struggling with technicalities. Lastly, it lobbies politically to receive federal money for its projects.
