Naomi Klein has drawn our attention to how capitalists will withdraw funds the state would normally use to combat natural disasters, wait for the disaster and then profit from it by offering to rebuild the area and work to change policies that benefit them. This is what happened after Hurricane Katrina. However, natural disasters also provide opportunities for workers to cooperate in aiding each other and building back their cities. This is practice for the socialism we need. We applaud the people of Mexico for helping each other in the aftermath of the recent devastating earthquake.
