The two world wars were greatly driven by something called “ethnic” nationalism.
In reaction to these wars, after World War II there was a drive to revive the other kind of nationalism, the “civic” nationalism of the Enlightenment. All but one country aspired to do this – Israel. For 70 years Zionist nationalism has based itself on the same, blood, geography, race and religious criteria as the ethnic nationalism of the world wars. Ironically, Zionism is providing leadership for the return of the very same ethnic nationalism in Europe that once viciously murdered six million Jews.
