Seymour Melman was an old-fashioned Marxist in that he believed that the flowering of the physical economy was a necessary condition for a self-managed workers’ form of production. He was merciless in showing how the emergence of profits made for the military should not count as GNP. In addition, Melman showed empirically that the existing socialist economies which tried worker self-management had better production records than the production records of workers under capitalism.
