When most of us think of the Enlightenment we think of the development of science and the power of reason. But this is only the moderate Enlightenment. This is the case because it still supported liberal Christianity and it still supported the monarchy, even though it had constitutional constraints. But as author Margaret Jacobs, cited in this article, points out there was also a radical Enlightenment. This radical Enlightenment rejected Christianity for pantheism, supported a republican form of government and was the home of radical political movements like the Diggers and the Ranters.
