Unlike many archeologists and historians who treat Africa as a collection of separate societies, Cheikh Anta Diop writes that there is a continuity across these societies. Just as European states were founded upon their relationship with Greece and Rome, African societies were cultivated from Egyptian civilization. Whether we agree with all Diop’s conclusions, his legacy as a Pan-Africanist is undeniable. At a time when Africa is attempting to define itself anew with help from China and other multipolarists, Diop’s legacy will help Africa cultivate a continental identity.
