General strikes are always important but the degree of their importance depends on at least two things. One is how long they last and the other is who is in control of them. In this particular case, we wish to draw attention to the South African Federation of Trade Unions who got behind the strike and the National Union of Metal Workers who are the most militant. The ANC, once the pride and joy of Nelson Mandela, was by-passed. As The Who sang 50 years ago, in Won’t Get Fooled Again – “The party on the Left is now the Party on the Right.”
