One of the stereotypes of worker cooperatives, at least in the United States, is that they are “goody-goody”, employing only the white middle class. But in Italy some Italian coops are hiring prisoners (about 2,000 of them) to work in order for them to learn skills that will help them when they get out of prison. These prison workers get day releases and are employed on farms and wineries. They also make jewelry and handbags. Read this hopeful story!
