Thanks to the successes of Amazon and Starbucks, workers in other industries are asking “why not us?” Workers at Trader Joe’s, REI, Target and even Apple have caught the union fever. This organizing has not been done by professional organizers but by the workers themselves. Why now? One reason is that a tight labor market gives workers better bargaining chips. In addition, watching capitalists’ profits rise during COVID must have raised the level of militancy among workers.
